Not sure how you're going to manage your child's school schedule and your work schedule at the same time this year? Worried that the stress of remote learning will have you spending more time nagging your child rather than nurturing them?
Our micro-school sites provide a safe learning and socialization environment with supplemental enrichment activities while ensuring all children, regardless of socioeconomic background, have access to our facilities.
Our membership fees are significantly less than the cost of a private tutor or nanny, and can work with any hybrid model schedule.
We have microschools in Canton and Medfield, MA, but when there's 7 kids interested in one area, we can open within a couple weeks!
We have plans that work with remote only, every other week, or hybrid models to ensure ultimate flexibility for your child.
By definition, micro-schooling is the reinvention of the one-room school house, where class size is typically smaller than that in most traditional schools, and kids learn in "pods" of mixed-age level groupings. And while we're not starting an official micro-school right now, we are opening sites for your child to join a pod and have an option for off-campus school days to solve your COVID school-year problem.
With our pricing model, four full pods operating at one of our micro-school sites pays for one pod of 10 children to attend entirely free for those families who don't have the means to hire the private care or education their children need and equitably deserve in our communities.
The fact of the matter is our children are more vulnerable now than ever due to COVID-19 closures. While children and teens stay home alone and online their risk of sexual predators, gangs, pornography, drug and alcohol use, depression, learning regression and boredom are at all-time highs as they may be unsupervised for greater periods of time while parents are working.
Our micro-school sites are an extension of our church's heart to serve and love with no strings attached. Our hope is that our buildings can host and enrich your remote learning pod and ultimately act as a way to serve our community in a time we need it most.
StoryHeights is comprised of a Christian, non-denominational church and non-religious foundation serving the poor, hurting and forgotten, which are both based in Newton, MA. Each micro-school site offers one remote learning assistant per 10 children, high-speed internet, technology stations, group discussion, optional enrichment activities, and all with COVID safety protocols in place. Each student has their own private work area that is over 6 feet apart from other students in the pod. There is a vast play area designated for kinesthetic learning and isolated activity studios for students to rejuvenate when they are digitally overloaded.
These pictures are from our Canton and Medfield sites. Our strategy is to sublease out of spaces that are already approved for public use. In Canton we rent out The Link Church and in Medfield we rent out MDA Studios, a dance studio. We look for spaces that are at least 3000+ sq. feet with big, clean, open rooms with commercial-grade WIFI. Within these learning environments are tables with age-appropriate learning materials for students to engage with hands-on learning during their breaks from digital learning. There is room for each child to have their private work station as well as extra rooms for gross motor time.
With enough money and the village around you, this challenge of what to do with the kids this school year can be solved. Those abundant in resource have the privilege and ability to navigate these educational challenges presented by COVID-19. Simply hire a tutor or a full-time nanny. Send your kid to private school. Rotate homes in your neighborhood for study groups and play dates with parents that are home.
But what about children who don't have those resources? What do they do? Organizing your micro-school pod at a StoryHeights site works for the good of all children everywhere and helps solve this problem.
With our pricing model, four full pods operating at one of our micro-school sites pays for one pod of 10 children to attend entirely free for those families who don't have the means to hire the private care or education their children need and equitably deserve in our communities.
And everyone can be involved with this crisis. Even if you don't have a school-aged child, but you're still worried about this problem, please consider donating to our scholarship fund so we can ensure our micro-school sites are accessible to all children.
All donations are 100% tax-deductible.
We know that during COVID-19 a lot of us parents are feeling uneasy about the future and frustrated with our present realities. As parents of four school-aged children ourselves, we are very familiar with the needs of parents right now. It's hard accepting that our sons probably won't be playing football this fall, and that our daughter won't have the same care-free kindergarten experience her brothers had. We have jobs, need to pay the bills, are adapting our businesses to the changes brought on by COVID on the fly, and we certainly don't have the time to motivate our kids to want to learn pre-algebra or how to read! We need help alone just keeping our marriage healthy and the dishes done. It truly takes a village now more than ever to thrive in the midst of challengem, but we know it's possible if we work together.
That's where this idea originated. Our passion is to serve and solve problems for the community and our city that we love so much. It's our why behind the what.
Your future may be uncertain, but as uncertain as it may be, rest assured you're not alone, and we can get through this together and do some good for the most vulnerable children in our communities in the process if we work together.
